About the Role

The Fulbright Program Advisor (Disability Focused) serves as a key resource within FWD, providing guidance to disabled Fulbright applicants, grantees, and alumni navigating the complexities of the Fulbright Program. This role isn’t just about general application tips — it’s about offering targeted advice on disability-related considerations, including accommodations, disclosure strategies, grant navigation, and leveraging Fulbright resources effectively.

We’re looking for several candidates that knows Fulbright from the inside — ideally an alum or someone deeply familiar with its processes — and who understands how to advocate within institutional systems without sugarcoating realities.

Requirements & Responsibilities

  • Advising Support: Offer one-on-one or group guidance sessions for prospective and current Fulbright applicants/grantees with disabilities, focusing on accessibility guidance, accommodation requests, and realistic expectations.

  • Resource Development: Help create and maintain FWD-specific resources (e.g., FAQs, guides, webinars) addressing disability-related aspects of the Fulbright experience.

  • Host Info Sessions: Organize occasional virtual Q&A sessions or workshops in collaboration with the Board to demystify the process for disabled scholars.

  • Liaison Role: Act as a point of contact between FWD members and relevant Fulbright offices or partner organizations when appropriate—not to fight battles for individuals, but to guide them on how to navigate challenges effectively.

  • Stay Updated: Keep informed on any policy changes, best practices, or trends within Fulbright that impact disabled applicants and grantees, and communicate those updates to the community.

  • Collaborate with Outreach & Events: Support partnerships or event initiatives tied to Fulbright advising, ensuring that disability considerations are always front and center.

Time Commitment

Flexible & On-Demand:

This is a responsive role, based on how many individuals seek advising support. Some months (like application season) may see more inquiries; other times may be quiet.

We work around your availability — you’ll coordinate with the Board to set realistic expectations for when and how you can offer guidance (e.g., setting specific advising windows, responding via email, or hosting occasional group sessions).

The key is reliability within your stated capacity — no need for constant presence, but when you commit to a time or task, follow through.

What You Gain as a Volunteer

  • A leadership advisory role within a global Fulbright chapter.

  • Opportunities to shape how disabled scholars approach and experience Fulbright.

  • Expand your network within the Fulbright ecosystem and advocacy circles.

  • The satisfaction of helping future grantees navigate challenges you already understand.
